Hiring a car in Oman

Hiring a car at Muscat Airport

Muscat can be much more than the beginning and end of a trip. Hiring a car gives you the flexibility to combine time in the capital with the coast, wadis, mountain scenery and inland towns without organising each journey separately.

Places such as Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Shab can fit naturally into a journey along the coast, while Nizwa takes you inland from Muscat. The right rental depends on the route you are actually planning rather than simply choosing the biggest vehicle available.

If most of your stay will be within Muscat, compare the cost and convenience of collecting a car immediately with hiring one only when you are ready to travel further.

Oman road trip

Where can you go from Muscat Airport?

Hiring a car opens up considerably more of Oman than the capital alone. These are useful places to consider when Muscat is the starting point for a wider journey.

Look beyond the headline

What to check before booking

Two rentals at Muscat Airport can look very similar until you compare the conditions behind the price.

Don't compare rentals on headline price alone.

01

Total price

Look at the overall cost rather than simply the first price shown.

02

Security deposit

Check how much may be blocked on your card during the rental.

03

Insurance excess

Understand how much you could be liable for if the car is damaged.

04

Mileage

Worth checking carefully if you plan to use Muscat as the starting point for a longer Oman road trip.

05

Fuel policy

Check how much fuel the car should have when you collect and return it.

06

Collection method

Check whether collection is at a terminal desk, by shuttle or elsewhere.

Oman by car

The road is part of the trip

One of the advantages of travelling around Oman by car is that the landscape between destinations is often part of the experience. Roads leave Muscat for rocky mountains, wadis and long stretches of coast.

Having your own car also makes it easier to stop when something catches your attention rather than limiting the trip to a fixed sequence of organised excursions.

Choosing a vehicle

Do you need a 4×4 in Oman?

Road through the rocky mountains of Oman

Not automatically. The vehicle you need depends much more on where you intend to drive than on the fact that you are visiting Oman.

Many common journeys from Muscat follow paved roads, including routes towards Bimmah Sinkhole, Wadi Shab, Sur and Nizwa. If those are the kinds of places on your itinerary, compare suitable standard cars as well as larger vehicles.

Other routes are different. Jabal Akhdar is an important example where a four-wheel-drive vehicle is required for the mountain road, so a route like this can affect which rental makes sense for the whole trip.

A 4×4 also does not automatically mean that a rental company allows off-road driving. Always check the individual rental conditions as well as the access requirements for the places you intend to visit.

Car rental at Muscat Airport FAQs

What is the main airport for Muscat?

Muscat International Airport (MCT) is the main international airport serving Muscat and a practical starting point for a wider trip around Oman.

Should I collect my car at the airport or in Muscat?

It depends on your itinerary. If you plan to leave Muscat soon after arriving, airport collection can be convenient. If you are spending time in the city first, compare the cost and convenience of collecting the car later.

Do I need a 4×4 in Oman?

Not for every itinerary. Many common routes use paved roads, while particular mountain, desert or off-road journeys may require a 4×4. Check the requirements for your planned route as well as the rental company conditions.

Do I need a 4×4 for Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole?

A 4×4 is not normally needed simply to reach the usual visitor areas for Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole from the main coastal road. Check current conditions and your rental agreement before travelling.

Should I simply choose the cheapest rental?

Not necessarily. Compare the final price alongside the deposit, excess, mileage, fuel policy and collection arrangements before deciding which offer suits you.
